OMPT vs IB Maths vs A-level: Which Proof Universities Accept

Half the students who email me asking how to prepare for the OMPT do not need it. They have IB Analysis SL, or an A-level in Maths at C, or an AP Calculus score, and nobody has told them the programme page lists exactly those. The other half assume their national diploma is enough and find out in June that it was never on the list. Below is the diploma table across the universities I have verified, the branches for the awkward cases, and five checks to run before you spend €240 on a test you may not need. The OMPT scores themselves are collected in OMPT universities and score requirements.

Why the OMPT sits next to IB Maths and A-level at all

Dutch universities admit on the VWO diploma, which has two maths tracks that matter here: wiskunde A (applied, for business, economics and social science) and wiskunde B (calculus-heavy, for econometrics, science and engineering). Every foreign diploma is mapped onto those two levels. Nuffic says an IB Diploma is comparable to a VWO diploma but publishes no subject-level maths mapping; the universities do that themselves, and differently. Belgian, Norwegian and Finnish universities run the same logic against their own school systems.

The OMPT was built by SOWISO with UvA, Maastricht and Erasmus as "an alternative mathematics qualification for students with a math deficiency", and OMPT says its tests "are not directly comparable to Dutch Wiskunde A/Wiskunde B/Wiskunde D tests". In practice OMPT-A stands where wiskunde A is required and OMPT-D or B where wiskunde B is, but letter and pass mark are the university's choice; which OMPT test do I need covers the letters.

Does IB Maths replace the OMPT? It depends on AA versus AI and SL versus HL

For wiskunde A-level programmes (business, economics, most social sciences), Analysis and Approaches at SL or HL is accepted everywhere in the table, and so is Applications and Interpretation HL. Applications and Interpretation SL is the course that splits them: Maastricht SBE and Tilburg's social science programmes list it, Groningen FEB does not, VU takes it at grade 5 or better, and Erasmus School of Economics, Nyenrode and Utrecht do not take it at all. An AI SL student applying to Erasmus IBEB needs the OMPT-A at 70% (first attempt only); the same student applying to Maastricht International Business needs nothing.

For wiskunde B-level programmes the answer narrows to Analysis and Approaches HL. Maastricht DSAI and CS, VU econometrics and computer science, Tilburg Econometrics, Groningen EOR and UvA's D-variant programmes all list AA HL alone, several with a minimum grade: 4 at UvA and Groningen, 5 at Erasmus IBEOR, where AA SL at 6 may instead sit an entrance exam. Maastricht EOR is the outlier that also takes AA SL or AI HL. A 7 in AI SL does not beat a 4 in AA SL at any of them. A forum thread from January 2026 records an AA HL 5 applicant to the Erasmus double degree being told to sit the OMPT-D anyway; a 6 exempts, a 5 is case by case.

Do I need the OMPT with A-level Maths? Full A-level, AS, and where it was earned

A full A-level in Mathematics clears the business requirement at every Dutch university in the table, and the grade bar is modest: A to C at VU, Tilburg and Groningen, a minimum B at RSM, Erasmus and Nyenrode. Maastricht SBE and Utrecht even accept AS-level Maths for business and economics; Groningen EOR asks for "Mathematics A2-level", the full qualification. Tilburg Psychology sits at the other extreme, accepting an A-level at D or a GCSE at A to C.

The catch is geography, and it is Belgian. KU Leuven exempts holders of "a GCE A-levels diploma in the UK"; A-levels sat outside the EEA, however good, put you in the non-EEA group that must show SAT, ACT, AP or OMPT proof. KU Leuven also sets subject rules on the exempting A-levels: three A-levels with Maths at B for the BBA, Maths at A with Physics or Chemistry at B for Business Engineering. Dutch pages do not distinguish by country of the exam; Belgian ones do.

AP, SAT and ACT: where the American tests count and where they are refused

AP Calculus AB is the most portable American proof: a 4 satisfies Erasmus, RSM, Nyenrode, KU Leuven and Antwerp, a 3 satisfies Tilburg and Groningen, and Maastricht lists "AP exam Statistics or Calculus" without a grade. Tilburg also takes AP Statistics at 3 for its A-variant programmes. A 2026 forum post shows Erasmus accepting an AP Calculus AB 3 in one conditional offer; treat that as an anecdote and the printed 4 as the rule.

The SAT and ACT are the dividing line. Accepted: KU Leuven BBA (SAT maths 640, ACT maths 27) and Engineering Technology 2026-27 (730, 32), Antwerp (640, 27), Radboud (SAT maths 600), LUT (maths 700) and Chulalongkorn (600, 25). Refused in so many words: RSM IBA ("The SAT and ACT are not accepted"), Erasmus School of Economics ("SAT / ACT are not accepted") and Nyenrode. Erasmus University College counts SAT 1170 or ACT 27 towards its average-grade rule but says neither replaces the OMPT-A at 70%. VU, UvA, Tilburg, Groningen, Utrecht and Maastricht do not list them, which in practice means no.

CCVX, Boswell-Bèta and KdVI: the Dutch offline alternatives

Three Dutch routes produce a VWO-level certificate most universities accept alongside the OMPT: the CCVX entrance exams (Utrecht only, three sittings a year, €98 on the English page), the Boswell-Bèta courses and exams (Utrecht, some online options), and UvA's own KdVI courses. Pass marks run from 5.5 at Groningen and VU to 7.0 for wisA at Erasmus, and the exceptions bite: UvA and Groningen EOR refuse Boswell for wiskunde B, and Maastricht SBE notes both are offline, "so presence in the Netherlands is required". Do I even need the OMPT? Five checks before you buy an attempt

1. Find the maths requirement on your programme's own admission page, not the university's general international page. Note whether it asks for wiskunde A or B level, or names a foreign course directly.
2. Find your diploma in that page's table (Maastricht calls it "additional subject requirements", Tilburg "mathematics requirements", Groningen "accepted certificates to lift a deficiency"). Match the exact course name and, where printed, the grade.
3. If your course and grade are listed, you do not need the OMPT. Keep a dated screenshot; pages change with the intake year, and RSM says its 2027 rules are finalised only by 1 October 2026.
4. If your grade is under the bar or your course is missing, read the deficiency options on the same page: OMPT (letter, score, attempts), CCVX, Boswell, KdVI, an entrance exam, or an AP result. Pick the one whose dates fit your deadline.
5. If your diploma is not in the table at all, email admissions and ask which category you fall into; do not buy an OMPT attempt on a guess. OMPT refunds only when the admissions office gave wrong instructions, so get the answer in writing first.

What to do if your maths is the awkward kind

IB Applications SL where Analysis is wanted

If the programme lists AI SL (Maastricht IB and EBE, Tilburg social sciences, VU at grade 5, BI, NHH), you are clear. If it lists AA SL/HL and AI HL only (Groningen FEB, Utrecht, Erasmus, Nyenrode), you need the OMPT-A at that programme's score, or CCVX or Boswell wisA. For a wiskunde B programme, AI SL is two steps short and the route is OMPT-D, B, or a wisB certificate; Erasmus IBEOR calls AI "too little" outright. AI SL students typically have the algebra but not the differentiation, which is 20% of the A, so the differentiation drills are where to start.

A-level Maths at a low grade

A D in A-level Maths clears Tilburg Psychology and nothing else in the table; VU, Tilburg's economics programmes and Groningen stop at C, and RSM, Erasmus and Nyenrode at B. Below the bar, the OMPT-A is the standard repair, and an A-level student usually finds a familiar syllabus in a foreign format: 52 questions in 120 minutes, exact answers, no calculator of your own. No maths in the final two years

Every table in this post keys on maths in the final two years of school. Without it, no diploma route exists and the menu is the deficiency options: OMPT at the programme's letter, or a Dutch certificate. This is the case the OMPT was designed for, and the omptest.org study estimates (80 hours for the A, 120 for the D) assume it. Budget a term, not a month.

US diploma

A US high school diploma is read through its APs. AP Calculus AB at 4 (3 at Tilburg and Groningen) is listed nearly everywhere; AP Statistics counts at Maastricht and Tilburg. Pre-calculus is not enough anywhere I have verified. A US diploma without a qualifying AP means the OMPT: A for business, D for science. KU Leuven adds that a US diploma earned outside the USA needs four APs or a SAT/ACT application.

Indian CBSE or ISC

Tilburg is the one university in the table with an explicit CBSE rule: Maths at A1, A2 or B1 counts for its A-variant programmes and A1 for Econometrics. Erasmus and RSM state the opposite: "Mandatory to pass mathematics deficiency exam" regardless of grades. Maastricht does not list India, so the assessment is individual. Erasmus or RSM: plan the OMPT from the start. Tilburg: check your grade against the letter. Anywhere else: ask admissions, since the diploma table on the programme page decides.

Turkish Lise

Tilburg's rule is unusual: a Lise diploma at 85% with maths at 6 hours a week over the last four years, and the OMPT-A (or OMPT-D for Econometrics) is required anyway. Erasmus makes the deficiency exam mandatory unless you hold AP Calculus AB or BC at 4. KU Leuven reads a Lise diploma with LYS results for eligibility and then applies its non-EEA maths proof. For Turkish applicants the OMPT is nearly always in the plan; the open question is the letter and the score.

Two students, one with the OMPT and one without

Student one has IB Analysis and Approaches SL at a predicted 5 and offers from Maastricht International Business and Erasmus IBEB. She wrote asking for an OMPT-A plan. She did not need one: AA SL appears on Maastricht's list without a grade, and Erasmus lists AA SL at 5. The only risk was the grade: had the final result come back a 4, Erasmus would have wanted the OMPT-A at 70% on a single attempt with a 15 January certificate deadline, so she sat a free A mock in July as insurance and would book only if results day went wrong.

Student two has A-levels in Maths (B), Economics and History from a school in Dubai and wants the KU Leuven BBA. In the Netherlands his Maths B would clear every business programme in the table. At KU Leuven the exemption is for A-levels obtained in the UK, so he is a non-EEA diploma holder and must show SAT maths 640, ACT maths 27, AP Calculus AB 4 or OMPT-A at 75%. With no SAT booked and 1 March eleven weeks away, the OMPT-A was the fastest route: a diagnostic at 71%, six weeks on logarithms and function questions, and 83% in mid-February with time for standard grading.
