The test itself
What is the OMPT?
The OMPT is the Online Mathematics Placement Test, a proctored maths exam run by SOWISO through omptest.org. Universities use it when your school diploma does not prove the maths level a programme needs: a business school that wants calculus from an applicant with an arts-stream diploma, a psychology faculty that wants statistics from a student whose curriculum skipped probability. You sit it at home under webcam supervision, it grades you as a percentage, and your university decides whether that percentage is enough: the OMPT passing scores note lists the bar each one publishes.
There is no single OMPT. There are seven variants, lettered A to G, and they are different exams with different syllabi, question counts, and time limits. OMPT-A is 52 questions in two hours and stops at differentiation. OMPT-B adds trigonometry and integration and stretches to 64 questions in 150 minutes. OMPT-D asks only 21 questions but gives you three hours, because each one is a multi-step problem. OMPT-E swaps calculus depth for statistics and probability. Your offer letter names the one you need; you do not get to choose, and preparing for the wrong letter is the most expensive mistake in this whole process. If the letter is silent, start with which OMPT you need.
A sitting costs €240 for most variants and €270 for the two long-form tests, D and F, at my last check of the provider’s pricing. Results come back in about eight business days as a certificate with an overall percentage and a per-topic breakdown. Answers are typed rather than picked from a list, and there is no partial credit: a correct method with a sign slip on the last line scores the same as a blank. The provider sells retakes, but your university caps how many it counts, and some only look at the first. Count the grading days back from the OMPT deadlines your programme sets before you book.

Read the pace column before anything else. A test that gives you 2.3 minutes a question and a test that gives you eight are preparing you for different kinds of pressure, even where the syllabus overlaps.

Question counts, minutes and chapters are from each variant’s published syllabus at omptest.org. “Goes up to” is the last chapter in that syllabus, a rough gauge of how far the maths reaches. The programme column is what I see in offer letters, not an official mapping; your own letter is the only one that counts.
A plan that fits most calendars
How to prepare for the OMPT in four weeks
Four weeks is enough for most OMPT-A, C and F candidates who finished school maths recently; B, D, E and G usually want six to eight. Whatever the length, the order below is the order that works.
Step 1
Week 1: measure, then rebuild the basics
Sit the free mini-mock for your variant on day one, timed, before you revise anything. The chapter breakdown tells you where the points leak. Then spend the week on numbers and algebra: exponents and roots, factoring, linear equations. Every later chapter leans on these, and most lost marks on every variant are algebra slips inside a harder question.
Step 2
Week 2: equations and functions, with a clock
Quadratics, inequalities, systems, function basics, exponentials and logarithms. From day three, do one timed drill set every other day at your variant’s real pace. Untimed practice tells you what you know; timed practice tells you what you can do at 2.3 minutes a question.
Step 3
Week 3: the chapters that make your variant its own
This is the week the letters diverge. OMPT-A and F: differentiation and its applications. OMPT-B and D: trigonometry and integration. OMPT-E: probability and statistics. OMPT-G: geometry, then the mechanics and chemistry chapters. Your variant’s hub page lists its chapters in exam order and a week-by-week plan written for that letter alone.
Step 4
Week 4: full-length mocks and error review
Two full papers at the real length, on the real clock, three days apart. After each, spend as long reviewing the misses as you spent sitting it: rework every wrong question untimed, then note the pattern (sign errors, misread wording, a chapter that is still soft). Run the score estimator on your second result; book the official sitting only when it says comfortable. If it says borderline, the Exam bundle gives you two more papers and every lesson.

Your university names the variant and the minimum score; the OMPT itself only reports the number.
Which OMPT variant do I actually need?
Your university tells you: it is printed in your conditional offer or on the programme's admission page, and there is no choosing between them. Rough map from what I see: business and economics get OMPT-A (sometimes F), econometrics gets B, psychology and social sciences get E, STEM gets D, and the Finnish science-track institutions use G. When in doubt, email admissions before you buy anything.
What score do I need to pass?
The OMPT itself never says pass or fail; it reports a percentage, and your university decides where the line sits for your programme. Maastricht's School of Business and Economics benchmarks 75%; Erasmus University College and UvA's PPLE ask for at least 70% on OMPT-A. Check your own programme's page for the exact number and aim ten points above it in practice.
How much does the official OMPT cost?
Most variants cost €240 a sitting at my last check of omptest.org's pricing; the two long-form tests, D and F, cost €270. A retake means paying the full fee again, and the official practice material is priced on top of that. We sell preparation only; the official test itself is always booked through omptest.org.
How many hours of preparation do I need?
omptest.org's own estimates: roughly 80 hours for OMPT-A or F, 100 for B, 40 for C, and 120 for D, E and G. Treat those as ceilings for a rusty start, not minimums. Students coming straight from a maths-heavy final year often need half that; students three years out of school should believe the numbers.
Are your mock tests the real OMPT questions?
No, and be suspicious of anyone claiming otherwise. Every question here is written by me from the published syllabus: the same skills at the same difficulty, in the same formats, but every item is original. The real test randomises values anyway, so memorising specific questions was never a strategy; owning the underlying skill is.
