OMPT help and frequently asked questions

The OMPT is the Online Mathematics Placement Test: a proctored maths exam that universities use when your school diploma does not prove the maths level a programme needs. It is taken remotely, graded as a percentage, and comes in seven variants (A to G) that differ in syllabus, length, and pace. Your university names the variant and the minimum score; the OMPT itself only reports the number.

SOWISO, a Dutch educational-technology company, operates the test through omptest.org. That is where you book, pay, sit the exam, and collect the certificate. We have no connection to them; this site sells original practice material modelled on the published syllabus, nothing more.

Your university tells you: it is printed in your conditional offer or on the programme's admission page, and there is no choosing between them. Rough map from what I see: business and economics get OMPT-A (sometimes F), econometrics gets B, psychology and social sciences get E, STEM gets D, and the Finnish science-track institutions use G. When in doubt, email admissions before you buy anything.

Mostly not. The real test is answered on screen, and for most questions you type the answer (a number, an expression, a set of solutions) rather than pick from a list. That is why our mocks use typed answers too, and why we accept any equivalent form. It also means guessing strategies from multiple-choice exams do not transfer; you either produce the answer or you do not. Check the current sample test at omptest.org before you sit, since formats can change.

OMPT-A

52 questions in 120 minutes, drawn from a curriculum of 176 topics across eight chapters, numbers and algebra up through differentiation. That is under 2.5 minutes per question, so speed on routine algebra matters as much as knowing the material.

OMPT-A, OMPT-B

Yes, and not subtly. OMPT-B has 64 questions in 150 minutes over 226 curriculum topics: everything on the A plus trigonometry and integration. omptest.org suggests around 100 hours of study for B against 80 for A. If your programme asks for B, start earlier than you planned to.

OMPT-C

OMPT-C is the shortest and most basic variant: 30 questions in 120 minutes over four chapters (numbers, algebra, linear formulas and equations, geometry). Programmes that only need proof of school-level algebra ask for it. Four minutes a question is generous, so the C rewards care over speed. Do not prepare for it with OMPT-A material; you would spend weeks on functions and differentiation that never appear.

OMPT-D

Because each one is a multi-step problem. The D covers the widest syllabus of any variant (242 topics including geometry and integration) and gives you 180 minutes for 21 long-form questions. Practising quick drills alone will not prepare you; you need to rehearse full written solutions.

OMPT-E

Statistics. Beyond the shared algebra-and-functions core, the E adds descriptive statistics, combinatorics, probability, random variables, and distributions, and skips deep calculus. Most students find the probability chapters the unfamiliar part, since school tracks often barely cover them.

OMPT-A, OMPT-F

Same territory, different shape. Both stop at differentiation, with no trigonometry or integration. The A asks 52 short questions in two hours; the F asks 21 extended problems in three. On the F a single question can chain five or six steps, so one slip early costs the whole item. Programmes such as NHH in Norway ask for the F; most Dutch business schools ask for the A. Prepare for the one your letter names.

OMPT-G

It does. The final chapters of the OMPT-G syllabus cover physics mechanics and chemistry alongside the maths (algebra, functions, sequences, trigonometry, geometry). It is 26 questions in 180 minutes. Budget separate prep time for the science chapters; they are not decoration.

omptest.org's own estimates: roughly 80 hours for OMPT-A or F, 100 for B, 40 for C, and 120 for D, E and G. Treat those as ceilings for a rusty start, not minimums. Students coming straight from a maths-heavy final year often need half that; students three years out of school should believe the numbers.

English, for every variant we cover. The maths notation is international, but the question wording is English, so if English is not your first language, read practice questions slowly the first few times. Most lost points I see from non-native speakers come from misreading "at least", "no more than", or "in terms of", not from the mathematics. Check omptest.org when you book in case other languages are offered for your variant.

Most variants cost €240 a sitting at my last check of omptest.org's pricing; the two long-form tests, D and F, cost €270. A retake means paying the full fee again, and the official practice material is priced on top of that. We sell preparation only; the official test itself is always booked through omptest.org.

At omptest.org, never here. You create an account there, pick the variant your university named, choose a proctored slot at least 72 hours ahead, and pay the fee. Book with the same name that is on the photo ID you will show the proctor, and the same email your university has, so the certificate matches your application file.

Count backwards. Standard grading takes about eight business days, so a sitting less than two weeks before the deadline leaves no room for a delay, let alone a retake. My rule: book a first attempt at least five weeks before the deadline if your programme allows a second attempt, and only after a timed full mock puts you ten points clear of the cutoff. Fast grading exists for emergencies, but it costs extra and does not fix an underprepared sitting.

The test is taken remotely under online proctoring: webcam, microphone, photo ID, and a scan of your room before you start. You book a slot at least 72 hours ahead. Do a full tech check the day before. A webcam that fails at check-in is the most avoidable disaster in this whole process.

A quiet room with a door you can close, a laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone (tablets and phones are not enough), a wired or reliable internet connection, and the photo ID you booked with. Clear the desk of everything the rules at omptest.org do not allow. Read those rules the week before, not the morning of: they decide what you may write on and what has to leave the room.

Plan on doing the arithmetic yourself. The questions are built so that clean algebra rather than number crunching carries you through, and the proctored environment restricts what you can have at your desk. Check the current rules at omptest.org/rules when you book, and practise without a calculator either way; that is the version the real test rewards.

Contact omptest.org support straight away, from the sitting itself if the interface allows it, and keep any evidence (a screenshot of the error, a note of the time). How they handle it is their policy, not ours, and it changes, so read the cancellation and disruption terms when you book. What you can control is the risk: use a cable rather than wifi, close every other app, and tell the household not to start a download for three hours.

OMPT-A, OMPT-B

The OMPT itself never says pass or fail; it reports a percentage, and your university decides where the line sits for your programme. Maastricht's School of Business and Economics benchmarks 75%; Erasmus University College and UvA's PPLE ask for at least 70% on OMPT-A. Check your own programme's page for the exact number and aim ten points above it in practice.

A digital certificate with your overall percentage and a breakdown by topic. The overall number is what admissions reads; the breakdown is what you should read if you need a retake, because it tells you which chapters to fix. Our free mock mirrors that layout on purpose: a percentage first, then chapters ranked weakest first with a drill link on each.

Treat every question as all or nothing. A typed answer is either accepted or it is not, so a correct method with a sign slip at the end scores the same as a blank. Two habits follow from that: check the last line of every question before moving on, and never leave a question blank when a considered attempt is possible. Our mocks grade the same way so the habit is built before it costs €240.

Standard grading returns your digital certificate with a per-topic score within about 8 business days. omptest.org sells a fast-grading option that cuts this down if a deadline is breathing on you. Check current turnaround times when you book, and count backwards from your university's deadline before choosing a test date.

Usually you do it: download the certificate from omptest.org and upload it to the application portal or email it to admissions, whichever the programme instructs. Some universities can verify the result directly with the provider. Either way, the name and date of birth on the certificate must match your application, so book the test under your passport name.

Generally up to three attempts are possible, but each attempt is paid separately and (this is the trap) not every programme accepts all three. Verify your programme's retake policy before burning an attempt on a "let's just see" sitting. A diagnostic mock here costs you nothing and answers the same question.

Where universities publish it, two years is the usual figure: Erasmus University College, NHH and Kaunas University of Technology all say so explicitly. Most admission pages stay silent on validity, which in practice means the score is checked for the cycle you apply in. If you are testing a year ahead of your application, confirm with admissions that the result will still count.

No, and be suspicious of anyone claiming otherwise. Every question here is written by me from the published syllabus: the same skills at the same difficulty, in the same formats, but every item is original. The real test randomises values anyway, so memorising specific questions was never a strategy; owning the underlying skill is.

Yes. Every variant has free sample questions in the same on-screen answer format as the paid mocks, with the worked solution shown after you answer, and no account needed. The free set deliberately includes harder items: if those feel manageable, the full mock will hold no surprises; if they do not, start with the topic pages first.

One full-length paper. Each variant has four generations, and they form a ladder rather than four flavours of the same thing. Generation 4 is written at the difficulty of the real sitting; each step down keeps the full question count and timing but spreads the questions wider across the syllabus at a gentler level. Generation 1 shows you which chapters leak points. Generation 4 shows you whether you are ready. Nobody needs to start at the top.

Sit the free mock first, then decide. If it felt rough, or you have not done this maths in a year, take the Foundation bundle (generations 1 and 2 plus every lesson): it finds the weak chapters and reteaches them. If you are already landing near your cutoff and the exam is inside four weeks, take the Exam bundle (generations 3 and 4 plus every lesson) and keep generation 4 sealed for exam week. Buying both is rarely necessary.

One taught lesson per topic, written the way I would explain it across a table: the idea in plain words first, then the two or three moves that actually get used on the exam, a worked example narrated step by step, and a callout naming the mistake that loses the most points on that topic. The opening quarter of every lesson is free on its topic page; the rest comes with either bundle.

You type each answer, the way the real test works, and the checker accepts any equivalent form: 0.5 and 1/2, x=3 and 3, an expression with or without spaces. Nothing is revealed until you submit. Then you get your score out of the full question count and can step through every question with its worked solution, including the ones you got right, because a right answer reached slowly is still a problem worth seeing.

As often as you like; access does not expire. The questions stay the same between sittings, so the first attempt is the real measurement and later ones are for review: redo the questions you missed a week later, untimed, until the method is automatic. If you want a second fresh measurement, that is what the next generation on the ladder is for.

No honest prep site promises that. A mock score tells you where you stand against your programme's minimum under realistic timing, and that is worth a lot, but the official test is written, run and graded by its own operator. My rule of thumb: score ten to fifteen points above your required minimum on a timed mock before you book, because the real exam gives no partial credit and exam-day slips are real.

No. This is an independent preparation site with no connection to SOWISO, the official Online Mathematics Placement Test, or any university that accepts it. "OMPT" appears here only to describe which official test our original practice material is modelled on. We have no access to the real question bank and do not reproduce it; the official test is always booked at omptest.org.

No. The free mocks, the topic drills, the lesson previews, and both planning tools work without signing in, and we do not ask for an email to show you a score. An account only exists to hold what you buy; it is created after checkout, with the same email address you paid with.

Checkout runs through our payment provider, Creem, on a hosted page that takes the usual cards and wallets. Every price on the site is in euros with VAT already included, so the number on the bundle card is the number you pay. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: nothing renews and no card is kept on file by us.

If a bundle or mock is not what you expected, email omptpractice@proton.me within 14 days of purchase and we refund it to the original payment method. We ask, but do not require, that you tell us what was missing so we can fix it. After 14 days the purchase is final, which is fair because by then you have had time to sit both mocks. For as long as the site exists. There is no expiry on a purchased mock or bundle and no yearly renewal. If you sit the OMPT, pass, and a friend asks the same question two years later, your account still opens the same material. If we ever had to close the site, purchased material would not simply vanish without notice; the terms commit us to not reducing what you already bought.

Nine times out of ten, a different email. Access is attached to the address you typed at checkout, and the account page only shows purchases for the address you signed in with. Sign out, sign in again with the checkout address, and it appears. If the two addresses are both yours and you would rather merge them, email us from either one and we move the purchase across.

Sometimes. When a code is running there is a field for it on the bundle card before checkout; enter it there and the price updates on the payment page. We do not run permanent discounts and we do not price-match, because the bundle already prices the two mocks at the cheaper mock's rate with the lessons on top. If a code appears somewhere other than this site, treat it with suspicion.

A receipt arrives by email from the payment provider straight after checkout, with the VAT shown. If you need it addressed to a company or a parent, or reissued to a different email, write to omptpractice@proton.me with the order email and we sort it out.

More than I can list in one answer: most Dutch research universities (Maastricht, the two Amsterdam universities, Erasmus, Tilburg, Radboud, Groningen, Utrecht, Leiden), KU Leuven and Antwerp in Belgium, NHH and BI in Norway, LUT, Arcada and Turku in Finland, five Lithuanian universities, two Católica schools in Portugal, and Chulalongkorn in Thailand. Each pairs its own variant and minimum with each programme, so check the university pages here for the exact requirement and its official source.

Three places, in this order: the conditional offer letter, the programme's own admission-requirements page, and the admissions office by email. Our university pages collect the first two for 31 institutions, with the variant, the minimum score, and a link to the official source for each programme, so you can confirm we read it right. If our page and the university disagree, the university wins, and we would like to hear about it.

Often not. The OMPT is the fallback for applicants whose diploma does not include the maths level the programme requires, such as IB Maths Applications SL where Analysis is wanted, or a national curriculum the university does not recognise for maths. Whether your diploma counts is a decision for admissions, not for us. Ask them before you spend €240 on a test you may not need.

Usually yes, as long as every programme wants the same variant and the score is still within each university's validity window. The percentage is the same certificate wherever you send it; what changes is the minimum each programme applies to it. A 72% might clear one business school's 70% and miss another's 75%, so check every target programme's number, not just the first one.

The provider will happily sell you another attempt; it is the university that caps how many it counts. Three is common (Maastricht SBE, Utrecht, UvA's quantitative economics tracks), two is frequent (RSM, NHH, Nyenrode, Groningen's science faculty), and the Erasmus School of Economics only looks at your first result. A one-attempt rule changes your whole prep plan: do not book until a full timed mock says you are ready.
