What this OMPT-A mock covers
The five questions are drawn from the second half of our generation-1 OMPT-A paper, so they land in the chapters that carry the most weight on the official test: quadratics and functions together are 22% of the OMPT-A score, differentiation is 20%. There is no numbers or plain-algebra item in the free set because those chapters rarely decide an OMPT-A result; the drill pages cover them.
| Question | Chapter | Official weight | Drill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Quadratic equations | 22% (with functions) | OMPT-A quadratic equations drill |
| 2 | Functions | 22% (with quadratics) | OMPT-A function basics drill |
| 3 | Exponential functions and logarithms | 10% | OMPT-A logarithms drill |
| 4 | Differentiation | 20% | OMPT-A differentiation rules drill |
| 5 | Differentiation | 20% | OMPT-A differentiation rules drill |
Official weights are from the OMPT-A learning-assessment page at omptest.org. The full chapter list with topic counts is on the OMPT-A hub.

How to enter answers on the OMPT-A
OMPT-A grades the final answer only. There is no note field to rescue a good method with a slip at the end, so the way you type the answer matters as much as the maths. These rules come from the OMPT knowledge base and they apply to this page as well.
- Exact form
- Unless the question asks for a decimal, the answer is a fraction, a root or a power. omptest.org's help centre says a decimal where exact form is expected can lose points, and the on-screen calculator does not convert decimals back.
- Fractions
- Type a slash with no spaces and reduce it: 23/14, not 1.64 and not 46/28. A mixed number is not expected.
- Roots
- Simplify the radicand and rationalise a denominator: 2√13 rather than √52, 2√5/25 rather than 2/(5√5). Type sqrt(13) or the √ symbol; both are read.
- Powers and constants
- Use the caret: x^2, 2^(x-1). Keep π and e as symbols (pi, e), never as 3.14 or 2.72.
- Several solutions
- Give every solution the interval allows, separated by commas, smallest first when the question says so. One of two solutions is marked incomplete.
- Intervals and inequalities
- Write the two-sided inequality or the interval: -1<x<4 or (-1,4). Round brackets exclude the endpoint, square brackets include it.
- Decimal point
- When a decimal is asked for, use a point, not a comma, and give the precision the question states.
- No units
- Type the number; the field knows the unit from the question. 20 and 20 m both pass here; 20 metres does not.
- Brackets
- Close every bracket. An unclosed bracket or a doubled operator is flagged orange on the real paper and goes to manual grading, where the grader guesses at your intent.
The calculator rules are covered in detail in our note on OMPT calculator rules; the OMPT-A uses the basic on-screen calculator shared by OMPT-A, B, C and F.
What the OMPT-A score panel shows
When you press finish, the panel scores the five answers, converts them to a percentage and lists the chapters weakest first. Five questions cannot place you to the percent, but three or fewer correct at 2.3 minutes each is a reliable signal that the full 52 would run away from you. The official certificate reports a score per topic in the same spirit; ours does it for free and before you have spent anything.
Free OMPT-A mock vs the official mock vs our full papers
The official OMPT-A mock is the closer copy of the real software, and it is graded by the same people who grade the test. This free mock is for pace and diagnosis. The paid generation papers sit in between: the full 52-question count and clock, instant grading, but no human reader.

Three worked OMPT-A examples in exact-answer form
These three are not in the mock above; they show the answer form the OMPT-A field expects and the entry mistake each question invites. More are worked through in our sample questions walkthrough.
OMPT-A example 1 · Numbers
Work out (2/5 + 3/4) ÷ (7/10) and give the result as a fraction in lowest terms.
- Add inside the bracket with denominator 20: 2/5 = 8/20 and 3/4 = 15/20, so the bracket is 23/20.
- Dividing by 7/10 is multiplying by 10/7: 23/20 × 10/7 = 230/140.
- Cancel the common factor 10: 230/140 = 23/14. The numerator and denominator share no further factor.
Answer: 23/14
Entry: Type 23/14. The on-screen calculator gives 1.642857..., and a decimal here is marked down because the question asks for a fraction.
OMPT-A example 2 · Quadratic equations
Solve x² − 6x + 4 = 0 exactly.
- The expression does not factor over the integers (no pair multiplies to 4 and adds to −6), so use the formula: x = (6 ± √(36 − 16))/2.
- 36 − 16 = 20, and √20 = √4 × √5 = 2√5.
- x = (6 ± 2√5)/2 = 3 ± √5.
Answer: 3 − √5 and 3 + √5
Entry: Enter 3-sqrt(5) and 3+sqrt(5). Leaving the root as √20 is not simplified, and 0.76 and 5.24 are decimals where the question asked for exact values.
OMPT-A example 3 · Differentiation
f(x) = √x + 2/x. Find f′(4).
- Rewrite with powers: f(x) = x^(1/2) + 2x^(−1).
- Differentiate term by term: f′(x) = (1/2)x^(−1/2) − 2x^(−2) = 1/(2√x) − 2/x².
- At x = 4: 1/(2 × 2) − 2/16 = 1/4 − 1/8 = 1/8.
Answer: 1/8
Entry: Type 1/8, not 0.125. The most common slip is differentiating 2/x to 2/x² with the sign lost; the minus is part of the power rule.
After you score the OMPT-A mock
Four or five correct: pace is not your problem. Sit the generation-1 OMPT-A paper under the full two-hour clock to check that the result holds over 52 questions, then move up the ladder.
Two or three correct: look at which chapters the panel lists first. If differentiation or logarithms are there, the OMPT-A differentiation drill and the logarithms drill are the fastest fix, because those two chapters are 30% of the official score between them.
One or none: do not buy a mock yet. Work the algebra and quadratic drills until they feel automatic, then come back and sit this mock again; it is free and it resets every time.
Drills by topic are on the topics page; the OMPT-A generation papers start at generation 1, which carries the 47 questions you have not seen.
Free OMPT-A mock FAQ
Is this OMPT-A mock free?
Yes, the OMPT-A mock on this page is free, needs no account and can be sat as many times as you like. It serves the five free preview questions from our generation-1 OMPT-A paper, which is the whole free exposure for this variant: buying the paper does not repeat them.
Is the free OMPT-A mock the real test?
No. The real OMPT-A is 52 questions in 120 minutes, run in Sowiso software under ProctorU supervision and graded by omptest.org's mathematicians. This mock copies the per-question pace, the typed exact-form answers and the chapter order. Every question is original; none is a real OMPT item.
How is the timer on the OMPT-A mock set?
The OMPT-A timer runs at the official pace: 120 minutes divided by 52 questions is about 2.3 minutes each, so five questions get 12 minutes. The clock starts when you open the first question, the same way the real timer starts only at Start, and it does not pause.
Can I retake the free OMPT-A mock?
You can retake the OMPT-A mock as often as you want, but the five questions do not change. A second sitting measures whether you fixed the specific errors, not whether you would pass. For a fresh set, the generation-1 OMPT-A paper has 47 questions you have not seen.
Is the OMPT-A mock harder than the real OMPT-A?
The free OMPT-A mock is drawn from the harder half of our generation-1 paper, which is the gentlest of our four generations. omptest.org says the real OMPT-A is similar in difficulty to its practice material; our generation-4 paper is the one written at that level.
Does the free OMPT-A mock give a score report?
The OMPT-A mock gives a score out of five, a percentage, and a per-chapter list ordered weakest first, each with a worked solution. It is not the official certificate, which is emailed by omptest.org after the real test with a score per topic.
Where are the official OMPT-A sample questions?
Official OMPT-A sample questions live inside the paid practice material (€95) in a chapter called Instructions and sample questions. omptest.org publishes no free public sample test; the free mock on this page and our sample questions walkthrough are the free alternatives.
More on the free sets for every variant on the free OMPT practice test page.
