Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam OMPT requirements: programmes, scores, deadlines

VU Amsterdam accepts the OMPT on more than twenty English-taught bachelors across six faculties: A, B or F for the business school and PPE, B for econometrics, D for Computer Science, A or B at 70% for AI, and E at 60% for psychology, law, social sciences and humanities. Two attempts per admission round, results valid three years, certificate emailed to your student advisor.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam accepts the OMPT on more English-taught bachelors than any other Dutch university, and it publishes the whole list in one PDF linked from its Deficiencies page. The School of Business and Economics gives applicants a choice on its main tracks: OMPT-A at 65%, OMPT-F at 60% or OMPT-B at 60% for Economics and Business Economics, International Business Administration and the John Stuart Mill College's PPE. The two econometrics degrees want OMPT-B at 60%. Computer Science sits OMPT-D at 60%. Artificial Intelligence, unusually for a science programme, takes OMPT-A or OMPT-B at 70%, a higher bar than the business school sets for the same test.

Then there is the long OMPT-E list at 60%: Psychology, Law in Society, Communication Science, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Political Science: Global Politics, and seven Faculty of Humanities bachelors from Ancient Studies to Philosophy. Every OMPT-E row carries a footnote worth knowing: OMPT-A at 65%, OMPT-B at 60% or OMPT-F at 60% is accepted in its place, so a business-track certificate also covers a social-science application.

Three rules hold across all of VU. A maximum of two attempts per admission round. An OMPT result is valid for three years. And the certificate is not uploaded anywhere; you email it to your International Student Advisor or the Student Desk so VU can verify the score online. SAT and ACT are not mentioned on any VU admissions page as a maths route, so if your plan was to reuse an American test score, VU is where that plan fails.

Which OMPT variant to sit for VU Amsterdam when you have a choice

Given the A-or-F-or-B choice on the business tracks, I usually point students to the A: the five-point-higher bar buys you a shorter test (52 questions in two hours, syllabus stopping at differentiation) with more prep material available. The F is the same material as 21 long-form problems in three hours, where a single abandoned question costs nearly five percent. The B adds trigonometry and integration for no lower bar, so it only makes sense if you are strong in those chapters or need the B for another university. For AI at 70%, the same logic applies with more force: the A at 70% is a hard but drillable target, the B at 70% is harder for the same result.

On the OMPT-E programmes, the E is the natural fit for Psychology and the social sciences because its second half is descriptive statistics, combinatorics, probability and distributions, chapters the degree itself will use. But a student who already holds an A at 65% from a business application does not need to sit the E; the footnote covers it. What VU Amsterdam accepts instead of the OMPT

VU's alternatives are broad and school-based. Boswell-Beta and CCVX certificates at 5.5 out of 10 work everywhere, with the level set per programme: Maths A for the business tracks and PPE, Maths B for econometrics, Computer Science and AI, and Boswell-Beta's VWO Maths C exam for the OMPT-E programmes; those certificates stay valid for ten years, and PPE also accepts the Korteweg-de Vries Institute's Maths A or B at 5.5. IB Mathematics counts at the programme's level (Applications and Interpretation SL at grade 5 or any HL course for the business tracks; Analysis and Approaches HL for econometrics and Computer Science; any IB maths subject for the Maths C programmes). A-level Mathematics at A, B or C works on every programme, AP Calculus AB or BC at 3 on most, AP Statistics on the Maths C programmes, and the German Abitur and European Baccalaureate have their own lines.

Two corrections to older advice. Law in Society does list alternatives (Boswell-Beta Maths C, IB, A-level, AP), and a strong applicant who misses the maths line there may still receive a conditional offer. And the Psychology page names CCVX only for a VWO Biology exam, so for maths the route is Boswell-Beta's Maths C or the OMPT. The Bachelor of Mathematics does not accept the OMPT at all; only Boswell-Beta and CCVX Maths B at 5.5.

VU Amsterdam OMPT deadlines and how to submit the certificate

Application deadlines are the standard Dutch pattern: 1 April for non-EU/EEA applicants and 1 May for Dutch and EU applicants, with the application complete within six weeks and no later than a week after the deadline. PPE gives EU and Dutch applicants until 15 June. Psychology is numerus fixus with 600 places: apply in Studielink between 1 October 2026 and 15 January 2027, sit the selection test on 6 March 2027, and submit the certificates by 15 July 2027. The 21+ Colloquium Doctum route closes on 15 December and does not use the OMPT.

The deficiency deadlines are what actually bind the OMPT. VU says a deficiency must be resolved by 1 June if you need a visa or residence permit, by 15 July for numerus fixus admits without a visa, and by 31 August for regular admits without a visa. A non-EU applicant should therefore sit by mid-May, or in April with a retake in hand, since only two attempts count per round. When the certificate arrives, email it to your International Student Advisor or the Student Desk; VU verifies the score online through the test provider, so there is nothing to upload.

Tuition, and what to do if you fail the OMPT for VU Amsterdam

Statutory tuition for 2026-27 is €2,694 (PPE €5,130; €2,771 in 2027-28). The institutional non-EEA fee is €14,310 a year for the business, social science and law programmes and €19,650 for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and PPE. Psychology's 600 places are allocated by lottery within groups; PPE selects on a GPA of 7.0 and motivation.

Two attempts per round means the first one has to be serious. If it falls short, read the per-topic breakdown, fix the chapters it names, and rebook only when a timed mock clears your bar by ten points and the grading will land before your deficiency deadline. If both attempts miss, the certificate routes remain open: Boswell-Beta runs Maths A exams in December, May and July and Maths C exams in May, July and August, so a summer exam can still rescue a September start for an EU applicant.   • IB Mathematics

    Business and PPE: Applications and Interpretation SL at grade 5, or AI HL, or Analysis and Approaches SL/HL. Econometrics and Computer Science: Analysis and Approaches HL. AI: AI HL or AA SL/HL. Psychology, law and social sciences: any IB maths subject.

  • A-level Mathematics

    Grade A, B or C on every programme; AS-level also accepted on the Maths C programmes.

  • AP Calculus (or AP Statistics)

    AP Calculus AB or BC at 3 for the Maths A and Computer Science programmes; BC at 3 for econometrics; AP Statistics also counts for the Maths C programmes.

  • German Abitur and European Baccalaureate

    Abitur with Mathematics as Prüfungsfach or at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau; EB mathematics written or oral exam, at least three hours during the orientation cycle.

  • SAT or ACT

    Not listed anywhere on VU's pages as a maths route. If your plan was to reuse an American test score, VU is where that plan fails.
