OMPT for KU Leuven: Programmes, Scores and Deadline

KU Leuven is where I most often see a student with the right score for the wrong programme. The same faculty in Brussels runs one bachelor on OMPT-A and another on OMPT-D, the engineering faculty in Leuven is changing letters between intakes, and a preparation page still names the wrong variant. Below: each programme's rule in the admission pages' own wording, the deadlines, the exemptions, and a plan for a 60% D target against a 75% A target.

Which KU Leuven programmes ask for the OMPT, and at what score

Only the English-taught bachelors are in play. The Dutch-taught ones (Engineering Science, Economics, Business Economics) use their own instruments and a 1 February non-EEA deadline; the OMPT does not appear on their pages.

Two things in that table trip people. The Brussels faculty runs the BBA on the A and Business Engineering on the D, and a certificate for one does not serve the other; 78% on the A is worth nothing to Business Engineering. And Business Engineering, unlike the BBA and Engineering Technology, lists no SAT or ACT route at all: it is AP Calculus AB at 4 or OMPT-D at 60%.

Who is exempt from the KU Leuven OMPT, and the A-level trap

The BBA and Business Engineering pages exempt the same groups: holders of a degree from a recognised institution in the EEA or Switzerland; holders of the European Baccalaureate, the IB diploma or the AEFE-recognised French Baccalaureate; and holders of a GCE A-levels diploma obtained in the UK. Engineering Technology exempts EB, IB, EU-country GCE and EU degrees from the test but sends those applicants to a positioning test in Leuven "in the beginning of July".

The trap is in the A-level line. The exemption is for A-levels obtained in the UK (an EU country, for Engineering Technology). A-levels earned outside the EEA, at an international school in Dubai or Lagos, still need the SAT, ACT, AP or OMPT proof. The GCE route also has subject rules: at least three A-levels, Mathematics compulsory, minimum grade B for all three at the BBA (a C is possible after an Admissions Committee decision); for Business Engineering, Mathematics at A with Physics or Chemistry at B, Further Mathematics "highly recommended". IB holders heading for Business Engineering are "strongly advised" to have taken Analysis and Approaches HL. Everyone at the two Brussels programmes, exempt or not, also completes the faculty's free online maths test and uploads the result; it does not replace the OMPT. Business Engineering: the stray "OMPT-A" on the preparation page

The programme's own maths-preparation page contains the phrase "if you already have an OMPT-account (needed for the online admissions test OMPT-A for mathematics)". The admission requirements page for the same programme lists OMPT-D at 60%. The admission page wins, the "OMPT-A" looks copied from the BBA page, and the OMPT registration form maps Business Engineering to OMPT-D. Prepare for the A on the strength of that page and you will sit a test the programme does not accept.

The same page does have useful content: an online SOWISO preparatory track from mid-January, an on-campus refresher in Brussels from Monday 7 September to Thursday 10 September, 9:00 to 13:00, and the line "The complete foundation course costs €30". That course prepares you for the first year and the on-campus assessment; it is not a substitute for the OMPT-D certificate. A 2022 forum thread records KU Leuven's answer to a student with 51% on the D: "it's not 60%, so unfortunately not". There is no rounding.

Engineering Technology switches from OMPT-D to OMPT-G for 2027-28

The Engineering Technology page has two year tabs, and they say different things. For 2026-27: "Applicants need to reach a minimum score on one of the following tests: General SAT test with a minimum score of 730 on the mathematics section. ACT test with a minimum score of 32 on the mathematics section. the SOWISO OMPT-D test with a minimum score of 60%", with results valid for a maximum of 5 years. For 2027-28: "Applicants must submit a valid OMPT-G test result with a minimum score of 60%." SAT and ACT disappear, and the page notes that the G covers "mathematics and science".

The G is a different exam, not a relabelled D. The D is 21 long problems in 180 minutes with written working required, weighted Functions 30%, Trigonometry 15%, Differentiation 20%, Geometry 20%, Integration 15%. The G is 26 questions in 180 minutes, final answer only, weighted Functions, graphs and equations 45%, Sequences and series 10%, Trigonometric functions 15%, Geometry and coordinates 10%, Mechanics 10%, Chemistry 10%. No integration, but a mechanics chapter (motion equations, Newton's laws, free-body diagrams, work and energy) and a chemistry chapter (balancing equations, redox half-reactions, pH). A student who prepared for the D in 2026 and defers to 2027 adds two science chapters and drops integration.

KU Leuven deadlines: 1 March, 1 June, 1 July and the €90 fee

The FEB FAQ answers the two questions I get most. Double nationality: "If one of your nationalities is European, then July 1st applies." Retakes: allowed "if the results of the new test are available by the application deadline". The deadline is a results deadline, so count backwards: ProctorU wants 72 hours' notice, standard grading takes up to 8 business days counted from the day after submission, and fast grading (€120) cuts that to 4. For 1 March a non-EEA applicant should sit the first attempt by early February; the backwards calendar for several deadlines is in OMPT deadlines by university.

From application to upload, step by step

1. Identify your diploma's country. EEA or Swiss, EB, IB, AEFE French Bac or UK A-levels: you are exempt at the Brussels programmes (Engineering Technology sends you to the July positioning test instead).
2. Read the admission requirements tab for your programme and intake year on onderwijsaanbod, not the preparation page. Write down the letter and the minimum: A at 75% for the BBA, D at 60% for Business Engineering, D or G at 60% for Engineering Technology depending on the year.
3. Check what you already hold. SAT maths 640 or AP Calculus AB 4 settles the BBA; only AP Calculus AB 4 or the OMPT-D settles Business Engineering.
4. Sit the free timed mock for your letter here (D mock or A mock) and read the per-topic result before buying anything.
5. Register one OMPT account, link it to KU Leuven and the programme, and buy the attempt: €270 for the D, €240 for the A or the G. Schedule through ProctorU at least 72 hours ahead, early enough that 8 business days of grading land before your deadline.
6. Upload the PDF certificate in the KU Leuven application tool with the rest of your file, pay the €90 fee, and for the Brussels programmes upload the free faculty maths test result too.
7. Two programmes means two files and two €90 fees. One OMPT certificate serves both only if both accept the same letter; the BBA and Business Engineering do not.

A plan for a 60% OMPT-D target versus a 75% OMPT-A target

The two targets need different plans, and the wider D syllabus is the smaller reason. Sixty percent on the D is spread across 21 long problems where each step in your note can earn partial credit; you can leave the hardest third thin and still pass if the rest is clean and fully written out. Seventy-five percent on the A is about 39 questions' worth of marks out of 52 in 120 minutes, final answers only, no partial credit to lean on. omptest.org's study estimates are 120 hours for the D and 80 for the A.

The booking thresholds differ on purpose. I ask A candidates for 85% on a mock before booking a 75% test because a real sitting reliably costs a few points. For the D I ask for 70% before booking a 60% test, on a mock where the notes were written the way the graders want them, since on the D the note is where the partial credit lives. What to do if you scored 51% on the D, hold a SAT score, or missed 1 March

You scored under 60% on OMPT-D

KU Leuven does not round, and the forum record of its replies says so plainly. If the deadline still allows a retake with results in time, the certificate's per-topic breakdown is your plan: a 51% with geometry at 20% is a geometry problem, and geometry is a fifth of the paper. If it does not, look sideways: the BBA at the same faculty takes OMPT-A at 75%, a test that stops at differentiation, and a 2022 thread records exactly that pivot. And if the score is above 60% but the programme still says no, as one 2023 thread reports for an 81%, ask for reconsideration in writing; the OMPT is a maths gate, not the whole admission decision.

You already hold a SAT, ACT or AP result

For the BBA, SAT maths 640, ACT maths 27 or AP Calculus AB 4 does the job on its own; do not buy an OMPT attempt to improve on it. For Engineering Technology 2026-27 the SAT bar is 730 and ACT 32; below that, the OMPT-D at 60% is the route. For Business Engineering only AP Calculus AB at 4 counts; a SAT of any height does not. For the 2027-28 Engineering Technology intake nothing but OMPT-G counts.

The 1 March deadline is behind you

If one of your nationalities is European, 1 July applies instead. If you hold a Belgian residence permit, the Brussels programmes accept non-EEA applications until the start of the academic year and Engineering Technology until 1 June with results by 28 August. Otherwise the window is closed for this intake; contact the Admissions Office through its form, but plan for the next cycle and keep the certificate, which Engineering Technology accepts for up to 5 years and which the other pages do not time-limit.

How Antwerp and UCLL compare

Two KU Leuven applicants

Student one holds a Turkish Lise diploma and wants Business Engineering. His counsellor pointed him to the preparation page, he read "OMPT-A", and he had done six weeks of A material before we met in November. The admission page said D at 60%. He kept the algebra and differentiation work, added limits, trigonometry, geometry and integration through December and January, learned to write a note for every problem, and sat the D in the first week of February with a mock at 68%. The result came back at 64% with days to spare before 1 March. Had he sat on 20 February, standard grading would have missed the deadline.

Student two is Indian, applying to Engineering Technology, and originally aimed at the 2026-27 intake with an OMPT-D. A family matter pushed her to 2027-28, where the page now says OMPT-G only. Her D preparation covered functions, trig and geometry; she dropped integration. What she had to add was the science: constant-acceleration motion, free-body diagrams, redox half-reactions and pH, together 20% of the G. She sat the G mock cold at 48%, spent five weeks on the two science chapters and on sequences and series, and booked once a mock passed 70%.
