The trigonometry you actually need for OMPT-C: almost none

Short answer

OMPT-C has no trigonometry chapter at all. Its syllabus is four chapters, numbers, algebra, linear formulas and equations, and geometry, 66 topics in total, tested in 30 questions over 120 minutes. What C candidates mistake for "trig" is the geometry chapter: Pythagoras, angles, and basic figures. Full sine-cosine-tangent trigonometry lives on OMPT-B, D and G. If you have been grinding the unit circle for a C sitting, you can stop today.

I wrote this post because students keep asking the question in the same shape: "how much trig do I need for the OMPT-C?", usually from deep inside a generic trig course they bought out of caution. The straight answer saves them thirty hours, and it says something bigger about how to prep for the C, so it earned a full post.

What the C syllabus actually says

Per the official syllabus at omptest.org (checked September 2026), OMPT-C covers exactly four chapters: Numbers, Algebra, Linear formulas and equations, and Geometry. Compare that with the A's eight chapters and 176 topics, or the B's ten and 226. The C is deliberately the entry-level variant, used by programmes that need proof of solid school algebra rather than pre-calculus readiness.

The geometry chapter is where the confusion breeds. Geometry on the C means the concrete toolkit: right triangles and Pythagoras, angle relationships, areas and perimeters, the sort of spatial reasoning a strong secondary school course covers by age fifteen. You should be able to find the hypotenuse of a 6-8-? triangle in your head. You will not be asked to solve sin(2x) = 1/2 on an interval. Those are different worlds, and only one of them is yours.

How the confusion happens

It is worth naming where the bad assumption comes from, because it is reasonable on its face. Most prep content online is written for the A and B, where trigonometry either looms (B) or is famously absent (A), so "does my OMPT have trig?" becomes the first question everyone asks. Add the word "geometry" on the C's chapter list, and a nervous student pattern-matches straight to sine curves. Course sellers do not rush to correct them; a bigger syllabus sells a bigger course. The C's actual profile, easier material held to a high accuracy bar, gets lost between those two incentives.

The test's own numbers tell the real story. Thirty questions in 120 minutes with 66 topics behind them is a small, dense exam. Nothing on it should be new to someone who passed secondary school maths; nearly all of it will be rusty for someone who has not touched fractions-by-hand in five years. Rust, not reach, is the C's whole difficulty. Which is genuinely good news, because rust responds to two weeks of drills in a way that missing knowledge does not.

Spend the reclaimed hours where the C bites

The C is not free, though. Students fail it, and they fail it on unglamorous ground. Fraction arithmetic without a calculator. Negative numbers through multi-step expressions. Rearranging a linear formula for a buried variable. The material sounds trivial in a list and behaves differently at question 24 of 30 with the clock visible. Four minutes per question is generous, which is exactly why programmes expect accuracy: the C forgives slowness, never sloppiness.

My prep order for a four-week C runway: week one on numbers, fractions, negatives, powers and roots, all by hand. Week two on algebra, expanding, factoring, algebraic fractions. Week three on linear equations, inequalities, and formula rearrangement, plus the geometry toolkit. Week four is timed mixed sets and a full mock, using the spare minutes to check work rather than to finish early. Checking work is a skill; rehearse it like one.

One caution in the other direction: do not read "no trig" as "no study needed". The C's pass rates suffer most among confident students who skim the material, book early, and meet fraction arithmetic under a clock for the first time in years on the paid attempt. A single timed mock taken this week costs nothing and settles the question of which kind of C candidate you are.

The general lesson: prep from the syllabus, not the test family

The trig-for-C question is one instance of the most expensive habit in placement prep: studying for the OMPT in general instead of your variant in particular. The seven syllabuses are published, specific, and honestly not that long to read. Ten minutes with the official topic list would have saved every one of those thirty-hour trig detours. So before any course, mine included, buys your evenings: open your variant's syllabus, read the chapter names, and let that document veto your study plan. On the C, it vetoes the unit circle.
