OMPT for Maastricht SBE: Variant, 75% Rule, Deadlines

Maastricht produces more of my August emails than any other university, and they all have the same shape: a score in the low seventies, a deadline a fortnight away, and a question about whether 72 rounds up. It does not. What follows is the SBE procedure from first application task to certificate upload, with the dates, the prices, and the one Maastricht-specific purchasing rule that catches students who prepare from generic OMPT advice.

Which OMPT test Maastricht SBE asks for, programme by programme

The SBE maths page is short and everything below comes from it. Its opening line sets the tone: if you do not meet the criteria, "You are required to follow an online preparatory math course and then take the online math exam (deficiency exam)." Applicants who already meet the requirement may take the course anyway; for them the exam is optional.

One line in that table deserves a second look. The SBE page says the benchmark "for a pass in the OMPT test is a 75% score" and does not split the sentence by variant, so the natural reading is that B candidates face the same 75% as A candidates. No official page I have seen prints a B-specific figure. A one-line email to the coordinators costs nothing; guessing can cost a summer.

Who never needs the Maastricht OMPT: the diploma table

Before you buy anything, check whether your diploma already clears the requirement. Maastricht publishes an additional-subject-requirements list per diploma; the rows below are the ones I get asked about. It names subjects and levels only, no minimum grades.

Those who end up sitting the Maastricht OMPT are mostly two groups: holders of a listed diploma who took the wrong maths option (IB Applications SL for Econometrics, say), and holders of an unlisted diploma, who get an individual assessment and, usually, a MyApplication task called "Prove your proficiency in mathematics". If that task appears, the rest of this post is for you.

The 75% rule and the 70 to 74% grey zone

On OMPT-A, 75% is roughly 39 questions' worth of marks out of 52; on OMPT-B it is 48 out of 64. Partial credit exists and there is no negative marking, so the count is approximate, but you can drop about a quarter of the paper and pass. It sounds generous until a timed mock shows you 2.3 minutes per question. How the percentage is built is in OMPT passing scores explained.

The grey zone is real but narrow. The SBE wording is: "In case the OMPT score is between 70-74%, you can contact the course coordinators mentioned above to ask for possible exemption." Read the verbs. You contact; they may exempt. No criteria are published, and a 2025 forum thread about a 72% at Maastricht drew replies that the requirements are absolute. Ask, because the page invites you to, but keep preparing for the next attempt while you wait.

Maastricht's own prep course, and why the official OMPT practice material is off limits

This is the part generic OMPT advice gets wrong for Maastricht. SBE runs its own preparatory course on the SOWISO platform, the same platform the test runs on, with a separate enrol link per programme (IB and EBE share one). The page states that "The course costs between €35 and €40" and that "The course will generally take 60-100 hours." It comes in Dutch and English, and SBE strongly advises the English interface.

Before enrolling, SBE offers a 14-question diagnostic on a Qualtrics form with a blunt rule attached: one or more wrong answers, register for the course. Then comes the most useful sentence on the page: "Our advice is to write the test not before reaching a progress score in the score of at least 95%, or a trial test score of at least 80%." Both numbers refer to the course environment. Treat them as the floor, and treat 85% on a timed mock as the number that buys a cushion over 75%.

Now the purchasing rule. The OMPT help centre states that students who apply to Maastricht University's Faculty of Economics and Business "will not be able to purchase the OMPT practice material, but can participate in the Maastricht University Math Summer Course instead". That course is described as "very similar to OMPT-A and OMPT-B practice material", includes a teacher, and runs all year. Because the €385 bundle contains the practice material, the bundle is unavailable too. A second help article adds that OMPT practice materials for Maastricht only become purchasable from September, and that the previous year's expire at the end of August. So the official OMPT product line opens to you only after the 15 August cutoff.

The help centre names the practice material and the bundle and says nothing about the €90 official mock, so check the store once your account is linked to Maastricht. What you can always do is sit the free timed OMPT-A mock or OMPT-B mock here and drill whatever the breakdown flags. These are original questions written to the published learning outcomes, not the real test.

The SBE calendar: 15 January, 1 April, 1 May, 1 July, 15 August

The maths deadline is the same for every SBE programme (exam no later than 15 August), but the application deadlines around it differ, and they decide when you should sit.

Two things follow. First, the International Business page says the deficiency has to be cleared before the first year starts, and for visa applicants the practical cutoff is earlier, because Maastricht sends the IND file before 1 July. Second, 15 August is a sitting date, not a results date. Sit that day and standard grading returns the certificate within 8 business days counted from the day after submission, just before the 31 August enrolment tasks. That works on paper and leaves no room for a retake, a Dutch holiday or a proctoring incident.

My rule for Maastricht: first sitting by mid July. That leaves a grading cycle, a repair week and a second sitting before 15 August, with the third attempt in reserve. Booking goes through ProctorU at least 72 hours ahead; changing a booked slot costs a €50 admin fee; fast grading (€120) cuts the wait to 4 business days.

From application to certificate upload, step by step

1. Apply through Studielink and complete the MyApplication tasks by your programme's deadline (15 January for International Business; 1 April non-EU or 1 May EU for the others). A task named "Prove your proficiency in mathematics" is how you learn the OMPT applies to you.
2. Do the 14-question Qualtrics diagnostic on the SBE maths page. One wrong answer and SBE's advice is to register for the preparatory course.
3. Enrol in the SOWISO preparatory course through your programme's link (€35 to €40, 60 to 100 hours), in English.
4. Work until the course shows a progress score of at least 95% or a trial test of at least 80%, then sit a free timed mock here and aim for 85%.
5. Register one OMPT account, link it to Maastricht and your programme, and buy the attempt for your letter (€240 for A or B). Skip the practice material and bundle; the store blocks them for Maastricht FEB applicants until September.
6. Schedule through ProctorU at least 72 hours ahead, ideally for late June or July, never later than 15 August.
7. When the result arrives (within 8 business days, or 4 with fast grading), email mathprepcourse-sbe@maastrichtuniversity.nl so the coordinator can check it, and upload the PDF certificate yourself in MyApplication under the maths task. Maastricht can verify the score in the OMPT admission portal, but the upload is still on you.
8. Confirm in MyApplication that the maths task is closed before the 31 August enrolment tasks deadline.

A study plan sized for a 75% pass

omptest.org estimates 80 study hours for the A and 100 for the B; SBE's 60 to 100 hours for its course sits in the same range. At eight to ten hours a week that is eight to ten weeks, hence spring. The official weights decide where the hours go. On the A: Numbers 15%, Algebra 15%, Linear formulas and systems 18%, Quadratic equations and Functions 22%, Exponential functions and logarithms 10%, Differentiation 20%. On the B the balance tips towards calculus: Differentiation 25%, Integration 17%, Trigonometry 15%, Numbers down to 5%.

Why 85% and not 75%? Because a real sitting costs a few points a mock does not: the proctor check-in, the on-screen calculator, the exact-form answer rule. A student of mine went into the A with mocks at 78 to 81% and came out with 74%, one point below the benchmark and one email into the grey zone.

What to do if you scored 72%, failed twice, or have three weeks left

You scored between 70 and 74%

Email the coordinators the same day, certificate attached, and ask for the possible exemption in the page's own words. Do not wait for the reply before acting on the calendar: if you have an attempt left and it is before 15 August, book the next sitting now. If the exemption comes through, cancelling costs €50; if not, you are already booked. Meanwhile the per-topic breakdown shows where the points went; a 72 with 40% on logarithms is a one-chapter problem, not a maths problem.

You have failed twice

One attempt remains, so the third sitting has to be different from the first two rather than a repeat of them. Compare the two certificates topic by topic; a chapter under 50% on both is the whole plan for the next fortnight. Then look at the date. If 15 August is more than three weeks away, take the full repair cycle. If it is closer, weigh the offline alternatives the SBE page names, CCVX and Boswell-Bèta in Utrecht, which require presence in the Netherlands and have their own dates and fees. If the third attempt fails, OMPT attempts refresh with the class year on 1 October, but Maastricht's 15 August cutoff will have passed, which in practice means deferring. The deadline is within three weeks

Book now for a date about twelve days out, buy fast grading (€120) so the result comes within 4 business days, and spend the twelve days on the two highest-weight chapters you are weakest in; on the A that is usually Quadratic equations and Functions (22%) plus Differentiation (20%). If your first free mock is under 55%, three weeks rarely closes a twenty-point gap, and a conversation with admissions is better had now than on 14 August.

Two Maastricht applicants

Student one applied to International Business from outside the EU with a national diploma not on Maastricht's list. She submitted everything for 15 January, was assessed individually, and in February got the "Prove your proficiency in mathematics" task. Her first free A mock was 52%. She enrolled in the SBE course in March, reached the 95% progress mark in late May, sat the OMPT-A in mid June, and had 79% back before her IND file went off. Her margin was the calendar; a May start would have put her sitting in July with the visa clock running.

Student two is an EU applicant to Econometrics and Operations Research with IB Applications SL, which satisfies IB and EBE but not EOR. He applied for 1 May, sat the B in early July on mocks of 76 to 80%, and scored 71%. He emailed the coordinators about the exemption and, without waiting, booked a second sitting for the last week of July. Trigonometry had come back at 45% on the certificate, so those three weeks were trig equations and identities almost exclusively. The second certificate said 82%. The exemption reply, when it came, was moot.
