Utrecht University OMPT requirements: programmes, scores, deadlines

Utrecht is strict about scope: OMPT-A at 75% counts for exactly two programmes, Economics and Business Economics and PPE, with three attempts, and for nothing else at the university.

Utrecht University is the easiest OMPT policy on this list to state and one of the harder ones to meet. Exactly two programmes accept the test: Economics and Business Economics at the Utrecht University School of Economics, and the jointly run Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Both want OMPT-A at 75%, a 7.5, and the PPE page says in so many words that the OMPT-A is not accepted for admission to any other Utrecht programme.

That 75% puts Utrecht in the top band alongside Maastricht's business school and Nyenrode. On a 52-question paper it means you can miss roughly thirteen questions, and the OMPT gives no partial credit: a right method with a wrong final answer scores zero. The compensation is that Utrecht counts up to three attempts, so a first sitting used as a calibrated diagnostic is a defensible strategy here, unlike at the one-attempt universities. The requirement exists to reach Mathematics A at VWO level. Applicants with VWO wiskunde A or B, or an international diploma whose maths Utrecht judges sufficient, never sit it; everyone else clears the deficiency through Boswell-Beta, CCVX or the OMPT-A, and on EBE must pass before enrolling.

What Utrecht accepts instead of the OMPT-A

Both programme pages list the same school-based routes. IB: Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level or higher, or Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level. GCE: at least AS-level Mathematics. European Baccalaureate: the mathematics written exam at three hours a week over the final two years. US diploma: at least four Advanced Placements at 3 or higher, including AP Calculus AB at 3 or higher. If you hold one of those, you do not need the OMPT at all.

For everyone else, the deficiency routes are Boswell-Beta and CCVX (Maths A or B) alongside the OMPT-A. Those are course-plus-exam routes that take longer but suit students who want structured teaching rather than self-study, and both sit on the Dutch exam calendar rather than on demand. Utrecht OMPT deadlines and how to submit the result

The two programmes run on different calendars. PPE is selective, with a maximum of 75 students, and its page is already on the 2027-28 cycle: applications open on 1 October 2026 and the absolute latest date for applications and complete files is 14 January 2027 at 23:59 CET. An OMPT-A result belongs in that file, which puts the last safe sitting in the first days of January and the first attempt, if you want a retake in reserve, in November or December.

Economics and Business Economics runs a matching procedure rather than selection, with the standard Dutch deadlines of 1 April for non-EU applicants and 1 May for EU and Dutch applicants. Utrecht publishes no separate OMPT date for EBE; its rule is that you must pass the exam before you can enrol as a student. Neither page describes how the certificate is delivered beyond the general application file, so upload it with your other documents and confirm with admissions that it has been seen. Preparing for 75% on the OMPT-A

The A's syllabus runs from numbers and algebra through functions, exponentials and logarithms to basic differentiation, in 52 questions over two hours. At 75% the margin comes from the routine chapters being automatic, not from the calculus at the end: a student who loses six questions to sign errors and rearrangement slips has spent the whole allowance before reaching anything hard. The OMPT-A page has the chapter list, a four-week plan and a free timed mock; the common algebra mistakes note lists the errors that cost the most at this level.

My benchmark is simple: do not book the real test until a timed practice mock puts you at 85%. Three attempts is generous, but each is a fresh fee, and the PPE deadline in January leaves no room for a third sitting anyway.

Tuition, and what to do if you fail the OMPT for Utrecht

With three attempts, a failed first sitting is a data point rather than a disaster, provided the calendar allows a second. Read the per-topic breakdown, fix the named chapters, run another timed mock, and rebook when it clears 85%. If the third attempt also misses, or the deadline has passed, Boswell-Beta and CCVX remain open on their own calendars, and Utrecht requires only that the deficiency is cleared before enrolment for EBE.
