Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen lists the OMPT for exactly one bachelor: Creative Media and Game Technologies, at 55% on OMPT-A. The programme page states the rule plainly: mathematics is mandatory, you must have a passing grade in it on your final transcript, and if your mathematics level is insufficient you can take the OMPT-A test at a minimum score of 55%, a 5.5, with additional costs. The route exists for applicants who are short on prior maths, whatever their nationality, and it is one of the gentler asks in the Netherlands.

Fifty-five percent on the A is the same number as a Dutch 5.5, a bare pass, and the syllabus runs from numbers and algebra up to differentiation. For a student who was ever comfortable with school algebra, four to six weeks of steady revision is usually enough; the common failure mode is not difficulty but rust, particularly on fractions, exponents and rearranging formulas at speed.

Hanze publishes no attempt cap, no validity period, no OMPT-specific deadline and no submission instruction, so the practical rules are the application deadlines (1 June for non-EU/EEA applicants, 15 August for EU/EEA) and the test provider's own terms. None of Hanze's other English-taught bachelors names the OMPT.

Preparing for 55% on OMPT-A

Thirty-two right out of 52 in two hours is the target, on a syllabus of numbers, algebra, functions, exponentials, logarithms and basic differentiation. The OMPT gives no partial credit, so the skill is finishing questions cleanly rather than knowing methods. Sit a free timed mock first from the OMPT-A page; if it lands above 65%, book with confidence. If it lands under 50%, the per-topic breakdown will usually point at two or three chapters, and the common algebra mistakes note lists the errors that cost the most at this level.

Budget for the money side: the OMPT's test fee (around €240 at my last check of the official pricing) comes on top of Hanze's application, and a retake means paying again. One properly prepared sitting is cheaper than two casual ones.

What Hanze accepts instead of the OMPT

A passing maths grade on your final transcript is the standard requirement, on a diploma equivalent to Dutch HAVO (Abitur, Baccalauréat and A-levels are named; other diplomas are checked against the Nuffic database). Hanze publishes no IB, A-level, CCVX, Boswell-Beta, SAT or ACT thresholds for this programme, so if you hold one of those and your transcript maths is borderline, ask admissions whether it counts as a passing grade before booking a test.

Two other requirements sit alongside the maths rule. English: IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5 and at most two 5.5s. And the mandatory MPT survey (Multicultural Personality Test), to be completed within ten working days of applying (five for EU applicants applying between 25 June and 1 July); Hanze says failing to complete it on time may result in rejection. The programme itself is a four-year, 240-ECTS Bachelor of Science taught in English in Groningen, starting in September.

Hanze deadlines, tuition and how the OMPT result is submitted

Non-EU/EEA applicants apply by 1 June, or by 1 May if they hold a diploma from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Iran, Ghana, Afghanistan or Nigeria; EU/EEA applicants have until 15 August. The academic year runs from 1 September to 31 August. With no separate OMPT date, treat your application deadline as the date the certificate should exist, and sit the test at least two weeks before it to allow for grading.

Applications go through Studielink; Hanze gives no OMPT-specific upload instruction, so register at omptest.org with Hanze University of Applied Sciences selected, upload the certificate with your other documents, and confirm with admissions that it has been received. Statutory tuition for 2026-27 is €2,694; the institutional fee for non-EU students is shown only through Hanze's fee calculator.

What to do if you fail the OMPT for Hanze

At a 55% bar, most failures are pacing and rust rather than missing content. Read the per-topic breakdown, put a fortnight into the named chapters, run another timed mock, and rebook when it clears 65% and the grading will land before your application deadline. If the calendar has run out, the EU deadline of 15 August is late enough that a summer retake is realistic for European applicants; non-EU applicants working to 1 June have less room, and the honest option after a late fail is the following September. Hanze publishes no alternative maths certificate for this programme, so the OMPT is the route to fix.
